MentorYou
MentorYou
MentorYou is a career mentorship platform designed specifically for each user to connect and chat with a mentor tailored to their needs. This responsive website includes an app for users to always be in touch with their mentors for easy accessible check-ins. This website and app were designed for all individuals who need guidance about their career before they graduate, or even after they have graduated.
Scope: Coursera UX/UI Design Course
Duration: Three Months
Tools: Adobe XD, Procreate
Project Overview
Sometimes we don’t know where our future is going and what career we want to get into. Just getting through school and trying to keep a social life can make it hard to make a life-long decision at such a young age.
Many people leave school not knowing what they want to do as a long-term career. Some might know the field but not the specialization. There are even some who want to change their career but don’t know what they should do. Another big issue is that they don’t know where to look to find a mentor or know whether or not they can trust that mentor.
I wanted to solve not only the issue of where to find mentors to help with career guidance, but also how to get a mentor that best fits each person specifically. With this, I would create a website and app that users could match with, connect with, and interact with mentors at their convenience.
How might we create an engaging way for users to match with a mentor, keep the communication open, and keep users engaged in the program?

This site map shows the different drop-down tabs that would show up at the top of the web browser page. Users would be able to navigate to accessibility features and other pages.
Research
The research that was conducted was mostly qualitative. I used the website Maze to pool a group of individuals on their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about a mentorship program. From there, personas were made and more interviews were conducted through Maze for the entirety of the designs.
My target audience were users between the ages of 18-40 who are currently in school, about to graduate, or have already graduated. Users of any gender, sexual identity, and disability were included.

I wanted to give a young and easy-to-navigate atmosphere to the user to make the experience more pleasant and dynamic. I checked various references, patterns, colors, and typography combinations to get the youthful, sophisticated tone that I desired.

I finalized the structure and design of the app, and concentrated on the flow of the chat function with a mentor in the app as well as other features on the website. I wanted each platform to match the other and offer different features for users to want to use both the website and the app.
I also wanted to make sure that accessibility guidelines were met. For this, I chose to minimize the number of colors used throughout the website and app so as not to overwhelm users with too many bright colors. The ability to change any accessibility feature is placed in the navigation bar on the website and account page on the app so that users can change the settings to best fit their needs when using the device. Also, having the option to make the chat screen a full screen allows low-vision users to better interact with the chat function.
Overall, I believe that with my app and responsive website for career mentorship, users will have a better time interacting with their mentors and peers. They can easily connect with people and have access to an extensive library of resources from both web and the app no matter where they are in the world.
What I Learned and Possible Changes
This project taught me about the importance of not only building a product that is useful, but also building a product that could be used for the overall good of humanity. It makes me want to make sure that I am also working with people to create more products that are helping and not hurting people.
One thing I might add is a feature to change to dark mode. I know that more and more apps and even websites are allowing for dark mode which can be easier on the eyes for all users. I did not take this into consideration for this project but plan to in future projects.
